			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Siri describes itself not as a “mobile search tool,” as I have in the headline, but rather as a “virtual personal assistant.” The company  went public with its technology and iPhone app just a few months ago and now Apple has reportedly acquired it for an undisclosed sum that is likely more than $50 million but less than $100 million.<span id="more-740"></span> We learned of  this from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-buys-siri-a-mobile-assistant-app-as-war-with-google-heats-up-2010-4">Business Insider</a>, which itself learned of it from <a href="http://twitter.com/Scobleizer/statuses/13015365163">Robert Scoble</a>, who got the news out of an FTC filing.</p>
<p>Siri uses Nuance’s speech recognition technology on the front end and taps into third party APIs, such as Yelp, OpenTable, Citysearch <a href="http://siri.com/about/partners">and others</a> to deliver content  and results. What Siri does is analyze unstructured “natural language”  queries and deliver results in ways that are “actionable.” The company  is seeking to move beyond SERPs and take users to actions.</p>
<p>Here’s an example:</p>

<p>In the narrow frame of “Google vs. Apple,” people will want to  interpret this as “oneupsmanship” or in furtherance of their “war.” But  the technology is compelling enough that it justifies the acquisition  outside of that competitive context.</p>
<p>It is possible I suppose that “Apple wanted to keep it away from  Google” or otherwise better compete with Android’s now broad speech  capabilities. And I would speculate that Apple probably has a plan to  use Siri’s “intelligence” in ways that cut across apps, perhaps  embedding some of the core functionality in a future version of the  iPhone OS itself. We’ll obviously have to see.</p>
<p>Siri had an unannounced deal with a “tier one” US mobile carrier,  which currently doesn’t sell the iPhone. It will be interesting to see  what happens there as well.</p>

<p>If you try to access Google’s <a href="https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal">external keyword tool</a>, you may notice that you are sent to the <a href="http://searchengineland.com/new-beta-google-keyword-tool-26498">new keyword tool</a> Google began offering in September 2009.  A Google spokesperson told me that they are now encouraging users to use the new tool over the old tool and have decided to direct a portion of those <a href="http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/022098.html">users to the new tool</a>.<br />

I asked Google if they plan on phasing out the old tool.  Google told me that the old tool is still available from the new tool via a link at the top right that reads, “previous interface.”  Google told me they do plan on phasing out the old tool for the new tool, but would not give me an estimated date for that to occur.  It is my understanding that Google wants to wait to hear any feedback prior to making that decision.</p>
<p>The new external keyword tool is still available to any user, without a login required, but there is an immediate captcha that is required before you utilize the tool.  There was an captcha on the old tool as well.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Online marketing is complex, and it seems that the number of factors you need to consider to make sure you have the optimal strategy is only increasing. Therefore, it might be tempting to conclude that SEO, or more broadly, online marketing, is something that needs to be outsourced. <span id="more-687"></span>There is certainly a strong case to be made for hiring external expertise, but outsourcing your SEO strategy completely does have some disadvantages. On the other hand, bringing people in-house has some advantages, but requires in-house people to stay current with developments in the industry. Today’s column will investigate the pros and cons of each approach, and the case for doing a bit of both.</p>
<blockquote><p>The outsourcing option</p>
<p>Whether outsourcing is best for you depends on your situation. Here are some of the pros and cons of taking this route:</p>
<p>Pros:</p>
<p>* Expertise. It can be easier (sometimes much easier) to find someone who has the expertise you need now.<br />
* Leverage industry exposure. SEO consulting firms have visibility into many different projects across many different types of sites. This breadth of experience is very difficult to recreate in-house.<br />
* Persuasive power of an external authority. In my last two columns I discussed how important it is to</p>
<p>sell management on the benefits of investing in SEO. Management may simply by more willing to believe the advice of a recognized industry authority over their in-house people.</p>
<p>Cons:</p>
<p>* Lack of understanding of the internal company environment. Any external organization, no matter how skilled, is simply not going to understand your company as well as someone who lives and breathes your company culture every day.<br />
* Less committed. SEO consulting firms are likely to have many clients. Losing one client is not desirable, but it is not a disaster either.</p>
<p>The in-house option</p>
<p>Here is a brief look at the pros and cons of hiring your own internal SEO talent:</p>
<p>Pros:</p>
<p>* Internal expertise. Consulting relationships are often designed to be temporary, and once a consultant is gone, so is a lot of the knowledge gained around a search marketing campaign. Of course, employee relationships come to an end too, but usually not as often, or as quickly, so the knowledge is retained by the organization for a longer period of time. If you have more than one internal SEO resources this risk is reduced even further.<br />
* Better positioned to sell internally. Somewhat paradoxically, external authority can be helpful in selling the benefits of SEO, but an employee is in a better position to sell to many different stakeholders within an organization. There are many groups that are impacted by SEO, and they all need to be sold on the process.</p>
<p>Cons:</p>
<p>* Potentially more expensive. You can hire a consultant and engage only a portion of their time, but an employee generally requires full time work and benefits.<br />
* Scarcity of top talent. You may need to train your in-house talent, because many of the top SEO consultants are making a lot of money, and bringing them in-house to work for you could cost you more than you might be willing to pay.<br />
* Learning on the job. A corollary to the prior point is that to keep costs down you may need someone to learn the necessary skills on the job.</p>
<p>The argument for doing both</p>
<p>While there are compelling arguments for both outsourcing and hiring in-house talent, there are also some strong arguments for doing a bit of both. Given the challenges of staying current with developments in SEO and online marketing, consulting with a firm or individual who makes a living doing just that can be a big advantage. The consultant’s ability to work on different sites and with clients who have a wide range of needs can be a pretty compelling advantage.</p>
<p>On the other hand, hiring an in-house SEO position has advantages as well. As outlined above retaining knowledge and expertise, and the ability to sell across multiple departments in the company can be a huge benefit.</p>
<p>Of course, the needs of every organization are different, but SEO and online marketing are must-haves for your organization. For many, the best choice will be to decide on what expertise is essential to have in-house, and make a plan to build it or buy it. Then, supplement that with external expertise to make sure your in-house team can leverage all of the expertise of external SEO professionals.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s been no shortage of blog coverage about the stray iPhone SEO left  behind by Apple engineer Gray Powell in a California bar last month.  While gadget and Apple blogs have been busily covering every possible  piece of minutia around the incident, the device, and whether or not Mr. Powell wears black turtlenecks, the crew at <a>Help Net  Security was doing a different kind of digging</a>.<br />
<span id="more-474"></span><br />
This is a hot topic right now, and Gizmodo&#8217;s now-infamous post has  created loads of juicy targets for the lowlifes who practice iPhone SEO  poisoning &#8212; injecting links to malicious sites and malware into search  results on sites like Google and Bing.</p>
<p>Help Net tried searching for Gray Powell on Google and found that the  first page of results returned 4 malicious links. Out of 10. Ouch. More  disconcerting is that fact that only one quarter of the engines used by  Virustotal.com detected the malware being served &#8212; double ouch.</p>
<p>So Powell&#8217;s unfortunate legacy (which of course has absolutely nothing  to do with the man himself) will ultimately be thousands and thousands  of Windows PCs infected with malware by users who just aren&#8217;t paying  enough attention to what they click.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m guessing Apple is only <em>a little bit </em>sad about that  prospect. Or perhaps not.</p>

<p>The <strong>Apple iPhone</strong> was indeed revolutionary and provided the true smartphone leap forward, that has been followed and in many ways  being surpassed by <strong>Android</strong>, with more and more  mainstream users browsing online via mobile devices.<br />
<span id="more-470"></span><br />
How does this impact &amp; affect the SEO that you have already  carefully crafted for your sites?  Not much…for now.</p>
<p><strong>Google</strong> CEO <strong>Eric Schmidt</strong> stated at  the <strong>2010 Mobile World Congress</strong> their new mantra &amp;  current strategy is “Mobile Firs<a title="pc magazine" href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2359752,00.asp" target="_blank">t</a>” thus you can be first by getting ahead of your competition by planting these mobile seeds into your site:</p>
<ul>
<li>Create a mobile version of your site optimally in a mobile subdomain or  subdirectory rather than a separate domain or TLD such a .mobi</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Render this mobile version of your site via mobile user agent  detection while also providing the user an opt out to the standard web  version.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The mobile version of your site should have the following DocType  declared above the HEAD code:  <em>&lt;!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC  “-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN”  “http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/xhtml-mobile10.dtd”&gt;</em></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The SEO coding elements will remain the same in the mobile version  but to improve usability &amp; reduce any possible duplicate content  issues its best to strip extraneous content, JavaScript &amp; graphics  out – optimally via CSS.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>A mobile site should have at least half the load time in comparison  to the standard  site with a true target of under 2 seconds load time on an Edge or non-3G signal.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>A mobile sitemap XML should also be created which has as the main  difference from the standard sitemap XML a &lt;mobile:mobile/&gt;  declaration after each URL listing – <a title="google mobile sitemap  instructions" href="http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=34648" target="_blank">Google Mobile Sitemap Instructions</a></li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>If you want</strong> to use search engine optimization best  practices, or want to get updated on the latest search engine  optimization techniques, there are a lot of good SEO resources to keep  you up-to-date. If you’re confused already about search engine  optimization, here are my expert thoughts about <a title="Search Engine Optimziation" href="http://hrhbusinessconsulting.com/search-engine-optimization" target="_blank">search engine  optimization</a> in 2010, based on my experience.<br />

First off, before I go any further, I need to explain what I mean  when I say &#8220;search engine optimization&#8221; (SEO). It means getting your  website noticed in the search engines, in the “free” or “organic,”  natural search results, not pay-per-click (PPC), which is “search engine  marketing,” where you have to pay to be listed. That said, let’s get on  with my list of issues with search engine optimization that you need to  be aware of.</p>
<h3>On-page Factors</h3>
<p>When it comes to SEO, it’s extremely important that your website is  search engine friendly. The search engines can crawl your website and  find all of the pages on the site. Each of these web pages contains  unique content (enough content so that the search engines can figure out  what your web page is about). Each web page must have generally  accepted “best practices” applied to it, which includes:</p>
<ul>
<li>A proper title tag.</li>
<li>Proper meta tags, including a meta description tag and a meta  keywords tag.</li>
<li>Proper use of .css style sheets, headings and sub headings, and  SEO friendly navigation.</li>
<li>No hidden text or content that’s not viewable by humans.</li>
<li>Good use of internal anchor text, which is the text that you use  to link to other web pages on your site. It needs to describe what  you’re linking to. For example, if I link to the “search engine  marketing services” page, the link text should be “search engine  marketing services” or something equally appropriate.</li>
<li>Proper internal link structure, which includes having more links  to your most important web pages.</li>
<li>Proper use of URLs (i.e., search engine friendly URLs), which  includes using keywords in the URL. Don’t use parameters, do rewrite the  URLs whenever possible.</li>
<li>Adding good, on-topic content on a regular basis to your site.  This can be in the form of articles, a blog, news items, new videos,  PDFs, a message board, a directory, a glossary of terms, press releases,  and other content. The most important idea here is to keep adding  content and growing your site, not just leaving it alone to be a static  site.</li>
</ul>
<p>There are a lot of other important on-page factors, and you can  review the latest search engine ranking factors, for example, that are  important. There really isn’t enough time here to cover everything  that’s important. For now, let’s move onto the search engine  optimization off-page factors.</p>
<h3>Off-page Factors</h3>
<p>There are also things you can do off-page to promote your site beyond  adding content and optimizing web pages. The first order of business is  to get your site “trusted” by the search engines (mainly Google). There  are several things you can do to get trusted, which includes doing a  few press releases and distributing them through the proper distribution  channels, as well as getting a few important directory listings, such  as <a href="http://dir.yahoo.com/">Yahoo! Directory</a>, <a href="http://botw.org/">Best of the Web</a>, <a href="http://www.dmoz.org/">dmoz</a>, <a href="http://www.business.com/">Business.com</a>,  and others.</p>

<p>Your website generally also needs to be in your more important  niche-type of directories, which will depend on your industry. If there  are industry trade magazines that have buyer’s guides or other on-topic  listings, you might start there. The whole idea is to get listed on  websites that require a human element or human review.</p>
<p>So, here are the important points:</p>
<ul>
<li>Get your site trusted (<a href="http://www.trustrank.org/">TrustRank</a>).</li>
<li>Human-edited directory listings.</li>
<li>Analyze competitors’ links.</li>
<li>On-topic links are key.</li>
<li>Focus on links from many unique domains.</li>
<li>Create off-site content and link back to your site.</li>
<li>Deep links are key (not just to home page).</li>
<li>Get “links to your links.”</li>
<li>Get a few links each day.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Social Media</h3>
<p>Combine your SEO efforts with social media marketing efforts. For  example, once you post on your blog, make sure that you promote that  blog post on the social media websites. Get links to your social media  links. Also, read more about Google’s Top Links feature.</p>
<h3>More About Anchor Text</h3>
<p>In 2010, exact anchor text is not necessarily good. Sure, it’s okay  to have a few exact anchor text links, and I would not go out and remove  the ones that already have exact anchor text. But you need to vary it.  Here are some examples:</p>
<ul>
<li>Example of anchor text: Search Engine Marketing</li>
<li>Example of good anchor text: Bill Hartzer, a search engine  marketing expert</li>
<li>Example of better anchor text: At the Pubcon Conference in  Dallas, Bill Hartzer, a search engine marketing expert from Texas, says  that you need to vary your anchor text.</li>
</ul>
<p>Links within sentences are ideal, search engines are aware of  information before and after the anchor text.</p>

Search engine giant Google has  warned companies that the incorrect use of search engine optimization  techniques could have serious negative consequences for both their  Google ranking and their reputation.<br />

Search engine giant Google has warned companies that the incorrect use  of search engine optimization techniques could have serious negative  consequences for both their Google ranking and their reputation.</p>
<p>According to the firm, companies that carry out SEO campaigns  incorrectly, or those which optimize their websites in a non-standard  manner could end up being blocked from search engine results pages.</p>
<p>Google claimed that badly designed websites can be mistaken for  &#8216;phishing&#8217; operations and could be wrongly identified as carrying out  illegal or malicious activities by crawlers.</p>
<p>The warning highlights the importance of turning to a professional  search engine optimization (SEO) firm when attempting to improve search  engine rankings for specific keywords and key phrases.</p>
<p>Secondary domain names that are improperly linked to a firm&#8217;s main  website are also a major source of problems for online businesses, the  search giant states.</p>
<p>Google notes that these additional websites can often have very little  to do with a firm&#8217;s core content and as a result can be flagged up as  unrelated or illegitimate.</p>
<p>The search engine firm also noted that companies should be cautious when  using third-party logos on their landing pages, as branding that  belongs to another company can lead to confusion, particularly if logos  are placed next to login fields or on online forms.</p>
<p>According to Google, crawlers can mistake the combination of data  gathering text boxes and unrelated company logos with phishing scams &#8211;  especially since there has been a dramatic increase in the number of  fake landing pages being used by cyber criminals to steal people&#8217;s  passwords and bank details.</p>
<p>With this in mind, Google urged firms to refrain from asking for  passwords to other sites as this will instantly earmark a website as  fake.</p>
<p>This common-sense approach to website design as a means of boosting a  firm&#8217;s search engine ranking was recently highlighted by industry expert  Howard Rybko.</p>
<p>Mr Rybko told Media Update that fancy website design should be secondary  to a clear and functional approach that leaves visitors unfazed and  unconfused.</p>
<p>Much like a successful search engine optimization campaign, Mr Rybko  claimed that good website design involves the strategic application of  resources and careful planning.</p>

That&#8217;s the finding of research done by Conductor, a New York-based firm which specializes in  measurement and optimization solutions. According to <i>MediaPost.com</i>, Conductor researched the SEO spending and return on investment of the  top 500 internet retailers and found that in the vast majority of cases, companies were not getting the results they would want for the keywords they placed the most value in.<span id="more-426"></span></p>
<p>According to Conductor&#8217;s research, the top 500 internet retailers spent  roughly $1.2 million per day on almost 90,000 keywords in the last  quarter of 2009. But out of the highest-priced keywords, only one-third  ranked in the top 50 natural search engine query results.</p>
<p>The results mirrored a similar study done by Conductor of Fortune 500  companies earlier this year. In both cases, long-tail keyword searches  showed a downward curve as the length of the keyword phrases increased.  According to Nathan Safran, senior research analysts at Conductor, the  research points out three things that retailers must do: define and  understand opportunities in terms of size and scale, create a plan to  execute the strategy and continually compare results with your  competitors.</p>
<p>&#8220;Too many organizations treat SEO as an after-thought,&#8221; Safran said. &#8220;It needs to be ingrained in the company&#8217;s culture.&#8221;</span></p>
