Twitter’s preparing to take another step away

Category: Daily Articles, Internet Marketing, Search Engine Marketing, Social Media Optimization

Twitter’s preparing to take another step away from its revenue-less past, according to a new report.  Rumor has it that a fresh “Promoted Trends” feature will complement the system of Promoted Tweets the company’s already devised.

Peter Kafka wrote this afternoon, “Advertisers will be able to insert their own term into the list of trends that Twitter displays on users’ home pages and on its login page.  Clicking on that term would call up a Twitter search results page, which would feature that advertisers’ ‘Promoted Tweet’ at the top of the results.”

Microsoft Income Jumps, Online Services Loss Does Too

Category: Daily Articles, Search Engine Marketing

Wall Street is a curious place. A number of companies last week and this week reported very strong revenues suggesting that the recession is in fact over. But investors, disappointed that performance wasn’t even stronger, punished their shares perhaps with more aggressive expectations than were justified under the circumstances.

Amazon and eBay are two examples of companies with strong revenues and income where investors sold off the stock. And so is Microsoft.

Redmond reported “record [fiscal] third-quarter revenue of $14.50 billion” with a 35% increase in net income. Investors responded by promptly selling Microsoft shares. Its stock fell about 4.5 percent in after-hours trading.

Privacy issues? Google engineers leaving Facebook in droves

Category: Daily Articles, Search Engine Marketing

Well I bet they didn’t quite expect that. In the wake of Facebook’s F8
conference this week, where it apparently bid to become the new Sheriff of the
Internet, Facebook’s plans to effectively put ’social’ into the very structure
of the Web has a few people a little concerned.

The main issue is that there are concerns that Facebook, by default,
now opts you in to allowing third party sites like Yelp to ‘personalise’
your experience, and there are questions about how much information
is given away.

Matt Cutts & Other Google Engineers Close Facebook Accounts

Category: Daily Articles, Search Engine Marketing

I was pointed to a tweet by Matt Cutts that indicates he’s “deactivated” his Facebook account:

Picture 10

He in turn points to a GigaOM post that explains how to block some of the “instant personalization” changes that Facebook is implementing as part of its Open Graph announcements on Wednesday.

This is a fairly drastic step by Matt; is it a protest or is he personally concerned about privacy?

Postscript: Apparently this is a wider “movement” than just Matt. Other Google engineers are doing the same: http://bit.ly/dwKHim

Google’s Hubble Telescope Doodle Links To Google Sky

Category: Daily Articles, Search Engine Marketing

Saturday, April 24th is the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Telescope by NASA. The launch date was exactly on April 24, 1990 at 8:33:51 am EDT. Google Australia already has a special logo up for the day. This logo, like the Olympics logo spans across the width of the web page. Something you may not notice is that some of the stars and planets can be clinked on. They actually hyperlink to Google Sky, so give it a try.

Google Hubble Telescope Doodle

I assume this will continue to go live on the various Google destinations as the clock hits Saturday around the world.

Gray Powell’s unfortunate legacy: iPhone SEO poisoning and malware

Category: Daily Articles, Internet Marketing, Search Engine Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Social Media Optimization

There’s been no shortage of blog coverage about the stray iPhone SEO left behind by Apple engineer Gray Powell in a California bar last month. While gadget and Apple blogs have been busily covering every possible piece of minutia around the incident, the device, and whether or not Mr. Powell wears black turtlenecks, the crew at Help Net Security was doing a different kind of digging.

This is a hot topic right now, and Gizmodo’s now-infamous post has created loads of juicy targets for the lowlifes who practice iPhone SEO poisoning — injecting links to malicious sites and malware into search results on sites like Google and Bing.

Analyst: “70 Percent” Chance Apple Builds Own Search Engine

Category: Daily Articles, Search Engine Marketing

Will Apple have its own search engine in the not-so-distant future? That’s what a leading tech analyst is predicting is likely to happen. Gene Munster, who analyzes Apple for Piper Jaffray, told Business Insider that he believes there is a “70 percent” chance that Apple will build its own search engine in the next five years.

Munster wrote to Business Insider to refute the publication’s earlier opinion that Apple won’t be building a search engine any time soon. Munster gave several reasons why he believes that an Apple search engine is more plausible than not:
